Youth Programs

GirlSpace: Taking Back Girl Talk

Unique from their male counterparts, girls face high rates of sexual violence and a significant decline in mental health as they enter adolescence and young adulthood. GirlSpaceZ is a virtual after-school program using the Zoom app. It is a safe space that welcomes and supports the many different experiences of being a girl.

Y-Space: Gender-Inclusive

Y-Space is a YWCA Edmonton pilot program. Y-Space, like GirlSpace, is a youth-led initiative. The distinction is that the content has been adapted to be gender-inclusive and neutral; workshops are provided to all youth at the same time, regardless of gender. Y-Space addresses key social issues facing youth in an inclusive manner.

Look Back, Push Forward

YWCA 150: Look Back, Push Forward is a civic engagement and leadership program for youth across the country. It provides young people with opportunities to enhance their leadership skills, build community, and become agents of change while improving their connection to their community and Canada. Funded by the Government of Canada, the program is a great way for young women to celebrate historic milestones achieved by Canadian women through coordinated events and activities. YWCAs serving 10 communities across the country have established youth councils giving them space to engage in their community and develop a strong public voice.

YWCA’s celebrations will reflect a full picture of Canadian history, giving young women tools and experiences that inform their ability to lead and think critically as they plan celebrations that honour women who were community leaders, trailblazers, door openers, artists, and activists.

Through this project, youth will explore the arts, culture, history, and heritage that is alive in their communities. They will be guided in their exploration of the history of the Canadian feminist movement and its legacy through excursions to local arts, culture, history and heritage sites, and organizations. Key experts, historians, arts educators, artists, activists, and concerned community stakeholders will share their knowledge and experience through the delivery of workshops, information sessions, and more.

Dream It, Be It

Dream It, Be It is a career-building program that aims to provide anyone who identifies as female (aged 12 to 17) with skills and values through direct and interactive work that will set them up for success in their future careers, whatever they may be. Dream It, Be It explores different career paths, connects girls to resources, mentors, and assistance to help girls find long-term success in their futures. Throughout seven sessions, participants will explore a variety of essential tools and factors for their future aspirations:

Session 1: Discovering Your Dreams

Session 2: Exploring Careers

Session 3: Creating Achievable Goals

Session 4: Rising Above Obstacles

Session 5: Turning Failure into Success

Session 6: Balancing Your Stress

Session 7: Putting Dreams into Action

Participants will be able to learn and develop the skills, values, and knowledge needed to excel in their future careers through real-life experiences and hands-on work. Participants will leave the program with volunteer hours and experience for resumes, references for future employment and educational opportunities, and information that is not provided through traditional educational settings that will help them to pursue their careers.
